My husband & I just spent 2 weeks in the Hipódromo Condesa neighborhood of Mexico City. In our previous stays in Mexico, we have stayed in a variety of lodgings: in Oaxaca, we stayed in a boarding house (with a private bathroom); in Coyoacán, we stayed in a Mexican guest house; in El Centro Histórico, we stayed at a Mexican business hotel. This time, we rented a 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom condominium in the Taman Condesa on Calle Alfonso Reyes for our stay. La Condesa, which means "the Countess", is in the Cuauhtémoc Borough of Mexico City. It is immediately west of Colonia Roma. Together they are often referred to as Condesa–Roma, one of the most architecturally significant and bastions of the creative communities of Mexico City. The bohemian district of La Condesa is a fashionable area with wide avenues, lined with trees. It is mostly filled with restaurants, cafés, boutiques, and art galleries. It is especially popular among young business people, students, pet lovers, and ex-pats. La Condesa neighbors La Roma, a similarly artsy enclave, but with more of a hipster edge.
La Condesa was named after María Magdalena Dávalos de Bracamontes y Orozco, the Countess of Miravalle, whose lands stretched from what is now Colonia Roma to Tacubaya.
